SOUND ON: Surveillance footage captures sleeping dog's response to a sonic boom that rocked the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

This file photo released by the US Air Force January 31, 2006, shows an F-16 Fighting Falcon from the 20th Fighter Wing, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.Federal officials have launched an investigation into how an unresponsive Cessna aircraftA loud sonic boom could be heard throughout the D.C. region on Sunday after two F-16s launched from nearby Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to investigate, military officials said.into the crash. Investigators are expected to be on the ground on Monday.

Authorities secure the entrance to Mine Bank Trail, an access point to the rescue operation along the Blue Ridge Parkway where a Cessna Citation crashed over mountainous terrain near Montebello, Va., Sunday, June 4, 2023.The unresponsive plane, a Cessna 560 Citation V, traveled at 34,000 feet through restricted airspace before crashing in a mountainous area of southwest Virginia at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time.

“The actual standards [for scrambling jets] are classified, but there is a good bit of judgement involved,” retired Marine Col. Stephen Ganyard said on “Good Morning America” on Monday. It appeared that military officials decided not to shoot the Cessna down because the plane was maintaining a constant high altitude and heading, meaning it wasn’t seen as a threat, Ganyard said.

In this file photo, the sign for Joint Base Andrews is seen on March 26, 2021, at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland.
