Nov. 2022 Election: Q&A with Daniel McAllister, candidate for San Diego County treasurer-tax collector [Opinion]
There are two candidates on the Nov. 8 ballot running for a four-year term as San Diego County treasurer-tax collector: chief financial officer Greg Hodosevich and incumbent Daniel McAllister, first elected in 2002.Between now and early October when voting gets underway, The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board is planning to publish dozens of candidate Q&As and nearly two dozen commentaries connected to a handful of San Diego city ballot measures and seven state propositions on the Nov.
A: Recruiting and retaining highly qualified professionals who are committed to providing excellent customer service. Our billing transformation is clearly underway. Special bills will need to be developed for unsecured and special targeted tax bills. In addition to collecting all secured and unsecured property taxes, we will need to harness the knowledge necessary to enable us to bill taxpayers via the internet. This is an example of how the technology of billing has many needs, including technological and trained personnel.
In the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office, we have a number of cash handlers , accountants, money managers and also an information section.Q: Are there sufficient field offices for Treasurer’s Office staff? If not, which communities should have one that do not? We currently have five convenient office locations around the county. They include offices in Santee, San Marcos, Chula Vista and Kearny Mesa and our main office at 1600 Pacific Highway in Downtown San Diego.
Q: How confident are you that the county’s pension fund is funded adequately enough to meet its obligations to retirees? What assumptions, if anything, should change?
