In a slowly gentrifying neighborhood like Northside, having a cultural touchstone like Poppa Burger and its greasy Mexican and American delicacies reminds longtime residents that no matter how much the area changes, some things will always be there.

Those are unique things that a lot of people from Northside share with their families, and its generational because it’s the same place that the younger generations continue to take their families,” Rivera said.When Rebeca’s uncle, Carlos Martinez, died in 1997, he passed the restaurant down to his daughters.
The only time Poppa Burger faced an existential threat was in the mid-2000s, when METRO Houston was developing plans to build its light rail Red Line through the neighborhood, on Main Street, Umanzor said. The restaurant’s ownersto make room for the new light rail line, but their fears were assuaged when the tracks were elevated above the block of Main Street where Poppa Burger sits.
