Linda Vallejos, left, speaks during a news conference calling on the Salvation Army to act following the Andre Jackson murder conviction Friday, May 6, 2022 in Houston. When Josue Flores, an 11-year-old with dreams of becoming a doctor, was stabbed 20 times on his walk home from school in Northside Village, the surrounding community erupted with grief and anger.
Now that Jackson has been convicted for the murder and sentenced to life in prison, residents and officials are urging the Salvation Army to carefully consider any plans to reopen its Northside location — shuttered after Josue’s death — saying it must take steps to improve the neighborhood’s safety. Advocates for the homeless, meanwhile, warn against judging an entire group of people based on the actions of one man.
“We do not want them to open their doors,” said Mireles-Walters, who grew up attending the same schools as Flores. “But if they they do open, here are a few suggestions that we need for them to follow.” Mourners came from as far as McAllen, moved by the cruel nature of the slaying. Mireles-Walters, who now lives in Humble, returned to the neighborhood for the first time in decades and was shocked by how much it had changed since she was a child.
