A northern Alberta man has been convicted of murdering an Indigenous girl in a remote northern community.

Renke also found Tallcree guilty of offering indignity to Ribbonleg’s remains.

The Crown initially asked for the ban, which Renke granted, on the grounds Ribbonleg’s identity should be protected because she was a sexual interference victim and a youth victim of homicide.Article content At some point after waking up the next day — July 5, 2020 — Ribbonleg left the hut on foot. Seven days passed before a search party found her body in a beaver burrow at the end of a quad trail.Article content

Renke, however, dismissed those arguments, saying Ribbonleg was likely unconscious and unable to defend herself at the time of Tallcree’s attack. He said the combination of Tallcree’s knowledge about Ribbonleg’s location, the fact his spermatozoa was found on her body and his efforts to divert attention from himself proved beyond a reasonable doubt he was the killer.
