Ellis is one of about 1,000 students enrolled in the college’s bachelor’s degree program for early childhood education and teaching. Through the plan, students can partake in an apprenticeship that allows them to earn their degree in just two years while working and earning money to prepare for a career in teaching elementary school.
College officials say that apprenticeship programs such as theirs are doing more than building experienced educators but also are providing a solution to a crushing workforce issue by making potential child care educators more marketable. Apprenticeship programs develop a “pipeline” of teachers who get the experience they need toward a degree and -- ideally -- stay to work at the center after completing the program, he said.— a nonprofit in Tarrant County that became the first Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for early childhood educators in the state in 2019 — is also finding holistic ways to build a stronger workforce. Initial information on the first four who graduated in September 2021 showed they earned increased wages, and three continued their education, according to Camp Fire’s 2020-21 The fast-tracked program makes it “seamless” for those already in the workforce to continue their education, DeHaas said. Typically, it takes four years for a community college student to earn the two-year associate degree, he noted.
Camp Fire’s expansion also focuses on reaching diverse populations, particularly among those who speak Spanish.
