Trooper James Horton was responding to a traffic stop Monday night when the unthinkable happened.
North Carolina state Trooper John Horton and a driver he detained Monday, Jan. 3, 2022, were both killed when Horton’s brother, Trooper James Horton, lost control of his cruiser and slammed into them as they stood on the roadside during a traffic stop. James Horton, who was responding to the stop to help his brother, was not seriously injured in the collision.RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C.
“Trooper James Horton collided with the stationary patrol vehicle and subsequently struck Trooper John Horton and the detained driver, who were standing along the roadside,” reads a statement from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. John Horton was a 15-year veteran trooper. His death was being mourned online Tuesday, including by his fellow law enforcement officers from other agencies.
