The North Carolina General Assembly has given final approval to new redistricting maps poised to empower the state GOP for years to come. Their passage Wednesday marks the final achievement for Republican leaders in an annual work session that saw policy preferences on abortion, LGBTQ+ and gun rights, and voting rights and education become law.

House Speaker Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, left, talks with Sen. Dan Blue, D-Wake, center, and House Minority Leader Robert Reives, D-Chatham, right, before the House went into session where redistricting bills were taken under consideration at the Legislative Building, Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, in Raleigh, N.C. Rep. Jason Saine, R-Lincoln, left, and Sen. Jim Perry, R-Lenoir, right, confer on the House floor as lawmakers debate over redistricting bills at the Legislative Building, Tuesday, Oct.

Bills vetoed by Cooper that are now law tightened North Carolina’s ban on most abortions from after 20 weeks of pregnancy to Democrats allied with Cooper argue the GOP this year tried to settle scores with the governor, who is term-limited from running for reelection in 2024, and to ensure the General Assembly is the strongest of the three branches of government.

The “issues that we’re seeing focused on in the legislature also do not reflect the views and priorities of most North Carolinians,” Ann Webb with Common Cause North Carolina said at a Wednesday news conference. “When you create noncompetitive legislative maps, you lose accountability to the voters.”
