Chunta Scott, 30, said that talking about finances was a taboo in her community.
“Programs like this help put people in that mindset about money and to not be afraid to ask a question,” Scott said. “Don’t be afraid to watch, see and know where your money is.”Vice President of Marketing Kate Rose Marquez said that during the pandemic, while working on virtual workshops, she realized her organization is not meeting clients, like Scott, where they typically are — southern Dallas.
Dallas is contributing $3 million, which amounts to 75% of what is needed. The rest is funded through corporate sponsorships, like J.P. Morgan, Capital One and Wells Fargo. However, Marquez said these centers will not be the only places residents can receive resources. WiNGS has partnered with other nonprofits including For Oak Cliff, The Family Place and held classes at southern Dallas libraries.
