Fletcher Cove on Sunday morning was a dreamy Southern California postcard: deep blue sky, scattered beach umbrellas and not a single cloud cluttering the sky.
They all had different reasons for showing up: to do good, to teach their children about volunteerism, to learn about wildlife and conservation. Yet, they were all drawn to the beach by Azi Sharif, the founder of an animal protection nonprofit called, which monitors wildlife on beaches from La Jolla to Orange County and engages in other animal protection and welfare efforts.
With these marching orders, about a dozen volunteers headed out to sift through the sand at Fletcher Cove, a beach in the center of the city’s coastline.
