SYDNEY, N.S. — A spokesperson for a north-end residents community group said she isn’t impressed by what she felt was a rebuff from the Cape Breton ...

Imperial Oil's Sydney petroleum storage and distribution facility is located adjacent to the harbour and is in close proximity to the community's historic and residential north end. “I emailed Mike Cecconi to see if there might have been anything interesting to talk about from that meeting,” Arsenault said. “And told me they’d keep us informed … there was a lot to do, still more things to discuss .” “We also asked for ‘no idling’ signs be put up and enforced, because the trucks had started idling right in front of George Street.”

“ Elizabeth and I met with them last Tuesday,” Arsenault said. “The first thing we found out regarding the ‘no idling’ issue was that the municipality has never had to erect a ‘no idling’ sign in the CBRM before. So they had to go and find out all their legal options.” Members of the Cape Breton Regional Hazmat Team and Cape Breton Regional Fire Service firefighters prepare a plan after a major spill of 600,000 litres of gasoline was reported at the Imperial Oil storage facility in north end Sydney on July 8. JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POST - JEREMY FRASER/CAPE BRETON POSTThe Cape Breton Post reached out to Ruus and the municipality for comment.

“It wouldn’t be enforceable by our bylaw department,” he said, “But of course, it would be an educational program from Imperial Oil to educate their drivers, and to let them know that they currently have idle-free zones and hopefully they would respect the wishes of the neighbouring areas where the trucks are parked.”
