MPs on the Procedure and House Affairs Committee heard from Trudeau’s top security adviser and other high-level civil servants.Jody Thomas, national security and intelligence adviser, waits to appear as a witness at the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs regarding foreign election interference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, on March 1, 2023.
MPs on a House of Commons committee seeking answers about foreign interference in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections met a dome of silence Wednesday when quizzing top national security officials on possible threats to election integrity. But they did learn from Shawn Tupper, deputy minister of public safety and emergency preparedness, that the RCMP “will not pursue criminal investigations” related to foreign election interference.
MPs from the Conservative, Liberal, NDP and Bloc Québécois parties heard first from Jody Thomas, national security and intelligence adviser to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as Tupper and a senior official of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development.
