AKRON, Ohio – A special grand jury has declined to indict the Akron police officers who shot and killed Jayland Walker last summer.
After the shooting, Akron’s police chief, Steve Mylett, asked the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to complete an independent examination. The eight officers, whom the city has refused to identify, were put on leave following the shooting but were reinstated to desk duty in October. She said she plans to ask the U.S. Justice Department to investigate the department’s policies and practices.Mylett said last summer that officers were trying to stop Walker, a DoorDash driver with no criminal history, for an unspecified traffic violation on East Tallmadge Avenue.
Police first tried to use a Taser before officers shot Walker. He was then handcuffed on the ground until officials with the office of the Summit County medical examiner arrived to pronounce him dead at about 1 a.m.in the arms, legs, abdomen and face. The manner of death was listed as homicide.
