President of the NL Medical Association, Dr. Kris Luscombe says while they applaud signing bonuses to attract physicians to the province and rural Newfoundland and Labrador in particular, there are concerns it could cause greater problems down the road.
The provincial government announced on Friday a new $25,000 signing bonus to family physicians willing to sign on for one year.Luscombe says the latest incentive, coupled with the additional $200,000 dollar signing bonus being offered to physicians willing to practice in Bonavista for a two-year period are great news, but he’s concerned it could pit communities against each other.
“We want to ensure that all similar communities have the same access to those bonuses.” He’s encouraged to see government already giving consideration to similar bonus schemes in other communities facing the same challenges as Bonavista.
