The Niles Police Department has recruited a pack of five feral cats to fight the rodent population in the village.

Sarwat Hakim holds Mickey, one of the feral cats she feeds, on Aug. 10, 2023, outside her Niles home. Niles police recently"deputized" a pack of five feral cats, including Mickey, to fight the rodent population in the village.

“Our Animal Control officer recently assisted the resident with obtaining a shelter for the cats, so our hope is the cats will remain closer to their home shelter during this pilot program,” Borkowksi wrote. That cat then had four kittens, forming the group that’s living in the Nordica Avenue area, she said. An additional 15 kittens were placed at a nearby animal shelter or with friends and neighbors, she said.

“They are together all the time,” she said. “They play together, they sleep together, they eat together. I pray nobody harms them. They are so innocent and adorable.”And as pest controls, the animals appear quite effective: “I haven’t seen any rats for a long time,” she said.
