Nick Taylor celebrates with drive\u002Dthru phone call from Wayne Gretzky
Sunday’s win was Taylor’s third, moving him one ahead of pals Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes, and two ahead of Adam Svensson, and the other man of the hour at Oakdale, Adam Hadwin. But it’s the magnitude and meaning of winning his national open on home soil and ending Canada’s seven-decade drought that he is still can’t quite grasp.
Taylor reckons he has seen the winning putt at least a hundred of times already, which, to be fair, is probably average for Canadian golf fans. In other big news, viral sensation Hadwin finally made it all the way to Taylor on Tuesday on the diriving range in L.A.Article content “I saw him briefly after the tackle but that was the first real conversation,” Taylor said of his Abbotsford, B.C. pal. “It was amazing that the guys were there. It turned into a meme for him, but I think he’s embracing it all. There was so many elements about what happened in those 10 to 15 seconds.”
Hadwin mentioned earlier in the day that it was weird becoming part of the story on Sunday, but Taylor was having none of it, saying that it made the moment even better. “We’ve grown up so long together, and played together, and we had an amazing week a month ago , and I think even in the past few months we’ve gotten even closer, and for him to be there and that to happen it just added to it,” Taylor said. “There is absolutely nothing he could have done. He was there to try and celebrate and just a random thing happened.
