A Nicaraguan court tried and sentenced a Catholic bishop to a 26-year prison term Friday, just one day after President Daniel Ortega disparaged the cleric for refusing to leave the country withJudge Octavio Rothschuh read the sentence on government-affiliated media, condemning Msgr. Rolando Álvarez, 56, on charges of undermining the state, spreading false news and resisting authority, among others.
In a speech Thursday about the prisoner release, Mr. Ortega said Msgr. Álvarez had refused to get on the flight to the U.S. until he met with fellow bishops. Mr. Ortega said the prelate was “out of his mind” and arrogant. He said Msgr. Msgr. Silvio José Baez, the auxiliary bishop of Managua who has been in exile in Miami since fleeing Nicaragua in 2019, condemned the Nicaraguan government’s action. “The Nicaraguan dictatorship’s hatred of Msgr. Rolando Álvarez is irrational and out of control,” Msgr. Baez wrote on Twitter.
