Government plans to fast-track the approval of new drugs could transform the lives of many NHS patients with life threatening conditions, according to a leading cancer specialist BawdenTom reports:

Government plans to fast-track the approval of new drugs could transform the lives of many NHS patients with life threatening conditions, according to aThe move has the potential to wipe at least six months off the time people have to wait for the UK to approveAnd it may be able to knock years off the time it takes the UK to approve a new treatment from scratch – given that, for example, on average, in Europe it takes an average of eight years to get market authorisation for a cancer drug,...

“From 2024, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Agency will move to a different model which will allow rapid, often near automatic sign-off for medicines and technologies already approved by trusted regulators in other parts of the world such as the United States, Europe or Japan. “Having efficient regulatory approvals is hugely important. NHS patients want to be the first in the world to get access to new treatments that could transform lives, enabling many more to live better and longer,” said Dr Lee, an associate professor at Oxford University and scientific lead on the Indie Sage panel of scientific experts.

“We welcome the announcement of additional resource for MHRA to develop a sustainable approach. It is vital that patients are able to access innovative new treatments quickly and safely. We look forward to seeing further details,” she said.“Our MHRA has stood itself apart as being a regulatory body that has always prioritised safety. However, safety does not mean that review processes have to take months or years.

“However, approval by the MHRA isn’t the only obstacle when it comes to getting new cancer treatments to patients. Once drugs are approved by the MHRA they still need to undergo appraisal by bodies such as NICE before they can be made available on the NHS.”
