Capps will be the first full-time NHRA Funny Car driver to compete in the Tony Stewart co-founded Superstar Racing Experience.
Capps, the three-time and defending Camping World Drag Racing Series Funny Car champion, has signed on to race a stock car in the Superstar Racing Experience race at Eldora Speedway in Ohio on August 10.
Capps will be the first full-time and active NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Funny Car racer to compete in the all-star series co-founded by Tony Stewart and features drivers—both retired and active— from different racing disciplines. Stewart, who races in the NHRA Lucas Oil Series Top Alcohol class, is also expected to race in the SRX series.
“SRX pretty much took the Motorsports world by storm three years ago. We all grew up watching the IROC series and Thursday Night Thunder was something I never missed as a fan. To have these two things together is a dream for both the fans and race car drivers,” Capps said. “It is such an honor to be selected to join the SRX series this year. I've been a huge fan of the concept to the point where we would make sure we got to a TV when we were at our NHRA races to catch the SRX races.
Drivers expected to race in the SRX in 2023 and their primary disciplines include Marco Andretti , Hailie Deegan , Ryan Hunter-Reay , Brad Keselowski , Bobby Labonte , Ryan Newman , Tony Stewart , Paul Tracy . SRX will air on six consecutive Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN and the ESPN App, bringing back the iconic “ESPN Thursday Night Thunder” branding.
