“Catch me outside SJP doing keepy-ups with Khashoggi’s heed.”
That vulgar reference to Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who the CIA says was murdered under orders of the country’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, was just one of the responses to my story back in October that a group ofoutside St James’ Park when Chelsea visited. The fixture was chosen by protesters because the previous time the two clubs played was the day after Saudi Arabia’s largest mass execution for decades, when 81 men were killed.
Looking back at the way fans came dressed in thawbs and headscarves on the streets of Newcastle to celebrate the takeover announcement, perhaps it was vaguely predictable it would come to this.Since then, the green of the Saudi Arabia flag, surrounded by cheering and chanting, has been spotted around Newcastle’s imposing stadium that overlooks the city, and so many of the fanbase have become defenders of a country whose Public Investment Fund owns their club.
Indeed, owning a battalion of online mercenaries – motivated by little else than the fact you’re funding their return to the summit of the English football pyramid – who are primed to charge, yelling and screaming and with keyboards raised, at your adversaries is perhaps more valuable than people realise.
