The charge relates to how GNS Science communicated volcanic risk to contractors in the years before the Whakaari White Island eruption in 2019.

GNS Science has now pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, acknowledging in a statement that it"failed to sufficiently consult, co-operate and co-ordinate with the helicopter operators", but not that there was a risk of death or serious injury. In the 11 months leading up to the fatal Whakaari White Island eruption, helicopter pilots transported GNS Science staff to the island 23 times and remained on the island while the scientists carried out their work. The period included an April 2016 eruption that was similar in size to the fatal 2019 eruption, but this occurred at night, when no-one was on the island. The period did not cover the fatal eruption itself.
