Since the very beginning, Ardern's taken swift action and has demonstrated an emotional intelligence that spans far beyond the usual administrative know-how—addressing concerns that stem both from the nation’s hospitals as well as kitchen tables.
"So, I say to the children of New Zealand, if the Easter Bunny doesn't make it to your household we have to understand that it's a bit difficult at the moment for the bunny to perhaps be everywhere," she added. Finally, she shared an idea for households to draw eggs and tape them to their windows in order to create an Easter egg hunt.
This light-hearted moment is really indicative of how Ardern has responded to the coronavirus outbreak. Since the very beginning, she's taken swift action and has demonstrated an emotional intelligence that spans far beyond the usual administrative know-how—addressing concerns that stem both from the nation’s hospitals as well as kitchen tables.
For the past two weeks, New Zealand has been on lockdown. Citizens who are not deemed essential workers are being asked to stay home except for necessary trips to places like the grocery store or the pharmacy. So far, the nation of about 5 million people hascases and recorded only one death. Today, they recorded a decline in cases for the fourth consecutive day. It's early, but it would appear that Ardern's handling of the crisis is something other leaders might like to look to.
When she speaks about what's expected of her citizens, she's exceptionally straight-forward. On March 21, she held a televised address from the prime minister's office, something that hadn't been done since 1982. During this address, held two full days before announcing a nationwide-lockdown, Ardern released an alert level framework for the nation and told viewers to get used to seeing her every day for the foreseeable future.
She also took the time to answer press questions about the framework and hosted several Q&A sessions on Facebook Live—. So, when it was time to announce the lockdown, her constituents saw it coming. With the news of the announcement came a clear-cut explanation of why they were going to do this and why it would require each and every person's participation to be successful. ... [+]She's never backtracked her words, and is always looking towards the next step.
