The New York primary elections turned into a big, intra-party brawl with huge implications for Democratic leadership in Washington—and it all started with a last-minute court decision in the spring. The contests were scheduled for June, but the New York Court of Appeals ruled in April that the redistricted map Democrats had drawn was unconstitutional.
That pushed primary day to Tuesday and put several prominent New York Democrats into direct competition with one another, guaranteeing at least one incumbent a loss and touching off sharp ideological battles across several districts., the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, were each elected in 1992, and have been allies for three decades on Capitol Hill.
