Parents at Riverdale and Horace Mann are at war with their $60,000-a-year private schools over 'out of control' COVID rules

One thing that most parents do seem to agree on, both publicly and privately, is vaccines. In late October the Food and Drug Administration authorized the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 shot for children ages 5 to 11. In theory, the more children get vaccinated, the more likely things like mask mandates will be relaxed.

Another mother of a private-school student is waiting for her son's headmaster to approve an exemption to the vaccine requirement. She told Insider that she told her relatives she didn't want to vaccinate her elementary-age child against COVID-19 yet and that they thought she's"insane.

Meanwhile, Tom Kelly, Horace Mann's head of school, said he hadn't seen any"attempts to 'game' the system" with such out-of-state exemption applications. Other administrators told Insider they allowed only doctors living in a family's state of residence to provide such exemptions. But some parents say the rules are flexible. Two private-school moms said they suspected that children of top donors had an easier time landing exemptions.

The headmaster of New York City's Horace Mann School said all parents are welcome to apply for an exemption from the COVID vaccine requirement."Every parent is interested. 'How was history class today? Who didn't come in?'" the Horace Mann mother said."You do the process of elimination to see who isn't vaccinated."

A nurse who works at a Manhattan private school said he could easily imagine parents rebelling."I guarantee most of these people don't like being told to do something that they don't agree with," the nurse told Insider."That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's hard to enforce rules when people have, for lack of a better word, an entitled viewpoint."

Leaders from Grace Church; Avenues: The World; Saint Ann's School; and Ethical Culture Fieldston School said parents had largely supported COVID-19 rules at their institutions. Few, if any, vaccine exemptions have been granted, they said.
