In the Swiss Alps, wood chalets greet travelers along the famous Haute Route. In Patagonia, refugios provide shelter from the wind-swept, rocky wilderness. More than 100 huts and yurts dot Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, including the dozens of huts built by the 10th Mountain Division. Across the globe, this type of wilderness infrastructure helps people go farther into the mountains and stay for longer. The adventures are seemingly limitless.
There are a handful of sparse, rustic huts in the Tahoe region operated by the Sierra Club. Those huts — like the Peter Grubb Hut on the other side of Castle Peak — are great. But they’re essentially just a shelter. You have to bring your own cooking gear and your own sleeping pad, unless you prefer plywood boards. The toilet is an outhouse, which is quite cold in the middle of a winter night.
