Marvel’s new Ultimate Spider-Man book spotlights Mary Jane and Peter Parker’s new family in spite of "One More Day," but not on Earth-616.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Marvel is introducing an all-new Ultimate Universe, and the Spider-Man in the starting lineup signals that the controversial One More Day story isn't going to be undone anytime soon. Previously, the identity of the new Ultimate Spider-Man was treated with an air of mystery.
Just last week, the new Ultimate Spider-Man series from Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto debuting in January 2024 received an update from Marvel emblazoned: "Meet The Parkers." The press release shared new variant covers for Ultimate Spider-Man #1 as well as key information about this version of Peter Parker.
Namely, this Peter has had his origin as Spider-Man delayed for years, and he and MJ have already married and had two kids by the time Spidey slings his first webs. The premise is intriguing, but some fans have taken it as a sign that this storyline being a key part of the new Ultimate Universe's first ongoing solo title means that Peter's status as husband and father is not coming to Marvel's primary continuity anytime soon.
New Ultimate Spider-Man Proves Marvel's Commitment to One More Day One More Day, the 2007 storyline that saw Peter Parker's marriage to Mary Jane Watson erased from reality, has remained unpopular among hardcore Spidey fans for nearly 20 years. Recent series have even played with reversing the original story's outcome or finding other ways to return Peter and MJ to a marital status quo.
Of course, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson are just fictional characters. Their relationship status should be the result of good storytelling, not a mob mandate from fans nor an authoritarian edict from editorial or corporate. What frustrates many fans to this day about One More Day is that it came about due to editorial meddling in the story. Disappointing many, it appears that in the 16-year period since its publication, Marvel remains committed to that choice.
