New rules for college football give players fair shake, but also open door for never-ending chaos | TimCowlishaw

Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler warms up before the Cotton Bowl Classic against Florida at AT&T Stadium on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, in Arlington. This column will not be about fairness. In pondering college athletes and their use of the transfer portal, I can’t waste a lot of time with fair. As someone who attended the University of Colorado, Richland Junior College and the University of Texas before landing that degree five years out of high school, I can hardly be anti-transfer.

Once the need to sit out was removed, the portal flew open like the standing room section doors at a Cowboys game. It was game on. And, yes, one last time, it’s fair. Here’s one way I look at it. Say you’re a football fan from around here but not a super fan. Say you left the country for a few months last July and you’re trying to get caught up. You could reasonably ask these questions:

The transfer portal is another matter. It reminds me of when the NFL got real free-agency — belatedly compared to other sports — in the early ‘90s. There’s no question it was fair that a player not have to spend his entire career in Cincinnati or whatever team might be at the bottom of the barrel. Likewise, players had the right to leave good teams in pursuit of better playing opportunities.

Players are faster and better conditioned now, but that’s a function of the times, not rules. Whether or not today’s NFL can be viewed as a superior product depends on where you live and how your team has done the last 20-30 years compared to the previous era.
