A new U.S. study suggests very low sodium intake does heart patients no good, and in fact may increase their risk of death.

Those are the findings recently presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session Together With the World Congress of Cardiology. The study was done between 2008 and 2022 and involved some 3500 heart failure patients.Article content “This was in line with a recent randomized controlled trial suggesting that restricting sodium more than what we do now doesn’t necessarily lead to better outcomes.”

Researchers found that heart patients on diets with less than 2.5 grams of salt per day were 80% more likely to die compared to those following a diet with a target of 2.5 grams per day or more.
