Clemens has already moved production of the Kunzler brand out of the Lancaster plant.

Clemens Food Group, the parent company of Kunzler & Co. in Lancaster , announced Friday it is closing the plant Dec. 7 and laying off 193 employees.Clemens, a large pork product company based in Montgomery County, moved all production of the icon Kunzler brand out of the plant this summer. The plant now is only producing private label hot dogs.

About 145 production and maintenance employees are members of the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 152, down from 153 a few weeks ago. The union has been in contract talks with Clemens. Dan Ross, president of the Local 152, said as recently as last week the union was attempting to return to the bargaining table. He said the union plans to seek a meeting with the company next week. The union filed a grievance with the National Labor Relations Board Friday morning immediately after being notified of the impending layoffs.

“They failed to produce requested information as well as for reallocating bargaining unit work to other facilities in an effort to undermine the union and they’re therefore discriminating against employees at the plant,” Ross said. “It’s really sad for the workers that have dedicated their lives there who have gotten sucked into corporate America takeover.”whose contract was set to expire Jan. 31, 2025. Terms of their layoff were negotiated Wednesday.

“While operations are scheduled to end ... our desire remains that workforce opportunities for those in the Lancaster area will continue with new plant ownership. We have had many conversations with an interested buyer and remain committed to sharing information with team members as it becomes available.”for the property. The property at 652 Manor St. remains listed in county tax rolls as owned by Kunzler & Co.
