According to a new study conducted by Reelgood, which ranks movies based on streaming interactions and general engagement, The Menu is the most popular horror movie of 2023. The movies don't have to have been released in 2023 to place, with the study ranking the films based on each title's top two most popular weeks between January 1 and October 10.
Why The Menu Was So Popular The Menu premiered at TIFF last September, generating fairly strong buzz right out of the gate. The movie wasn't a smash hit as the box office when it hit theaters in November, but it proved popular with audiences and critics alike. The film's Rotten Tomatoes score is an impressive 88%, with the audience score a little lower at 76%.
While a $79.6 million box office haul makes the film successful by traditional metrics, it seemed to hit a strong second wind when it landed on streaming on January 3. The Menu's ending spurred engagement and discussion on social media, as did the movie's inventive premise and twisting plot. Viewers also celebrated Taylor-Joy, who has been a star on the rise due to The Queen's Gambit, The Northman, and Last Night in Soho, in addition Fiennes' chilling turn as Chef Slowik.
Crucial to any movie gaining traction online these days is one or two scenes, images, or lines that viewers can discuss online. The Menu's cheeseburger scene was one such moment, not only because it looked delicious, but because it carried a great deal of emotional and thematic significance to the movie's plot and characters.
