ICYMI: New monument marks Ukrainian internment during First World War yyc
Borys Sydoruk with the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Foundation said many Canadians aren’t aware of the internments which took place in their own country, in areas they continue to visit.
“These individuals were interned not for something that they had done, but simply because of where they had come from,” Moussienko said. “We never want something like this to be repeated.”Article content Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek spoke at the event, calling Ukrainian internment a “shameful point in history.” She said it’s especially vital now to recognize the historic wrongs in the face of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
