A couple dozen of the El Monte Garment Workers were in D.C. for induction into the Labor Department's Hall of Honor.The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes labor giants like Cesar Chavez and Eugene V. Debs in its Hall of Honor. This week, a group was inducted — more than 70 Thai garment workers from L.A. County who were part of a landmark case of modern-day slavery.

Instead, she said she worked 18 hours a day, was not allowed to see a doctor when sick and was forced to buy food from her employers at huge markups, such as a watermelon for $14. When her mother died in Thailand, Jaknang said, she could not leave to arrange the funeral.
