New math curriculum from Eureka and Carnegie set to be in nearly all HISD schools next academic

Schools with an A or B accountability rating may opt out of the program, HISD Chief Academic Officer Shawn Bird said.An assessment, known as the Nation’s Report Card, showed that the number of HISD fourth-graders who performed"below basic" in math increased 14 percentage points to 37 percent since 2019. On average, HISD fourth-graders scored a 226, compared to 235 in 2019. The national average this year dropped to 227.
However, several educators worry that Carnegie is too text heavy, which is challenging for students who are learning English or who struggle with reading. When starting the new curriculum, Benzon said she would spend nearly three hours a night planning ahead and making the material more accessible to her students. She created documents in different languages and implemented techniques for special education and ESL students that she learned through HISD professional developments.“Educators hear from the children.
