Durham Region officials have announced the opening of a new low-barrier shelter on Dundas Street East. The shelter, located near Thickson Road, was previously Sunnycrest Nursing Home. The building will also house other services, as discussed with a Community Liaison Committee. Safety concerns have been raised by nearby residents. The region and the Town of Whitby have agreed on terms for the shelter's operation, including a privacy fence and a maximum capacity of 45 beds.

According to Durham Region officials, the new low-barrier shelter welcomed its first residents Wednesday morning. It is located on Dundas Street East , near Thickson Road , and previously housed Sunnycrest Nursing Home . Only some of the building is being used as a low-barrier shelter . The remaining floors and wings will house different services, which the region has been discussing with a Community Liaison Committee . People living nearby have expressed fears about safety in the area.

In November 2023, the region and the Town of Whitby struck an agreement on how the building would be run; terms included a ten-foot-tall privacy fence and a 45-bed cap. “We are officially able to begin helping people to get back on their feet,” said Regional Chair John Henry in a release. “As part of the region’s housing-first approach, supports, services and strategies, including 1635 Dundas, lead to housing to help people end their homelessness while meeting their basic needs. The ultimate goal here is to end chronic homelessness.
