A gap was identified in the community for people who have experienced the loss of a pregnancy or infant, resulting in the creation of a new support group by Algoma Family Services and its partners
A new local support group has been created to help people to navigate the loss of a pregnancy or infant and demonstrate they are not alone in their grief.
One in four women will experience a pregnancy that ends in loss, said Abbi Veira, a registered social worker for Algoma Family Services. Individuals who voluntarily terminated a pregnancy are not included in the eligibility for this group, but can seek support through the Algoma Pregnancy Centre. People often build up an idea of what their pregnancy is going to be and imagine their life with a new baby, ideas that can come crashing down with an unexpected loss.
