Authorities said Shane Cooper, 31, was taken into custody after officers found the Toyota Rav 4 in traffic on the Cross Bronx Expressway in New York City.
Police ended up managing to locate the vehicle after discovering the woman's iPhone was still in her car and tracked the vehicle's movements using a computer in the store.
"We were refreshing every 20 seconds and he was moving left to right, he was going southbound on 95, trying to go northbound, and ten minutes, eight minutes later they got him by the George Washington Bridge, about the enter the bridge," Kaid told WABC. NYPD officers were able to reach the SUV at around 8.30 p.m., a little over an hour after the woman had reported it stolen, on the Cross Bronx Expressway by Jerome Avenue, NBC New York reported. The woman's mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, and her son were unharmed during the incident, the station reported.
Cooper, of Teaneck, New Jersey, is facing a number of charges, including grand larceny auto, kidnapping, reckless endangerment, unlawful imprisonment and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17, police said.Update: This article has been updated with information from the New York Police Department.
