We talk to the Jeep boss about how the upcoming all-electric Wrangler and Recon will co-exist and what other Jeep EVs are coming.
that was just launched a year ago which has proven quite successful? To get answers, we recently sat down with Jeep brand CEO Christian Meunier in Detroit for a clearer picture of the future product plan as Jeep transitions to a full EV lineup of SUVs by the end of the decade.For starters, Meunier makes it clear the Wrangler will keep improving and nothing will dethrone it, regardless of powertrain.
Even when the Wrangler goes pure EV, it will top the off-road lineup."The Wrangler is the king, trail-rated 10, the best in class, the king of the hill," says the Jeep boss."The Recon is going to be a very good contender, but it is not going to be as good." The Recon is a midsize SUV and while exact dimensions have not been released, Meunier says it similar in size to the Wrangler. Both vehicles are designed for off-road adventuring and enjoying nature with the ability to remove panels for an open-air experience.Is the Recon just a stepping stone to get customers used to a battery-powered Jeep, priming the pump for the Wrangler BEV? No, says Meunier, they were designed to complement."We call them brothers, but they are different in style.
"I think the two products are going to be very complementary," Meunier says, but they will offer different experiences, initially driven by their different powertrains."We believe there is huge potential for the two to co-exist for a period of time but over time there will be a Wrangler BEV as well," Meunier says. He won't say when both the Wrangler and Recon are 100 percent electric only.
