In total, 10 cases associated with the outbreak were confirmed since July by laboratory testing, while another 22 were considered possible. The outbreak was announced on Aug. 3 after legionella was confirmed to have been found in a cooling tower at the Aberdeen Hospital. After facility staff cleaned and disinfected the tower, and following a re-test, no further legionella bacteria was detected, and the cooling tower was turned back on, with no identified risk to patients, the public or staff.
Nova Scotia Health is currently reviewing its legionella testing policies across the province to ensure consistency and increase frequency. Legionella is common in Nova Scotia, however the risk of infection is generally low.
