Family Intervention Representation and Services Team (FIRST), a new program through the Cuyahoga County Public Defender Office, can help families avoid custody battles and involvement with children services and other court-ordered interventions by connecting families to tools and resources to address the underlying causes of concern.

They had so many unexcused absences that social services were threatening to remove the boys, 15 and 12, from her home for educational neglect. Instead, the mother was referred to the public defender’s Family Intervention Representation and Services Team to try other options to get the kids back on track without having to remove them from the home.
