Comet Nishimura (C/2023 P1) was discovered in August and is now whizzing by Earth, but finding it in the sky will be a challenge.
Comet Nishimura is seen near Gleichen, Alta., in the early morning sky on Sunday. This image was created with a stack of six, 30-second exposures taken with a telescope and a Canon camera.Comet Nishimura will zip past the planet at a distance of roughly 125 million kilometres today.
Unlike some other recent comets, Comet Nishimura has only been visible in the pre-dawn sky rather than later at night, which has made it an early-morning catch. It is now transitioning to early-evening visibility, though it will be tricky to see as it will lie low on the horizon just after sunset. Telesat taps SpaceX to launch its broadband satellites in orbitCanada's Telesat on Monday said it has signed a agreement with SpaceX to launch its low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite constellation called Lightspeed starting in 2026, with the aim of providing global broadband service from space in late 2027. LEO satellites operate 36 times closer to Earth than traditional ones so they take less time to send and receive information, leading to better and faster broadband service even in remote areas. 'It is another big step forward on our path to get Lightspeed up there,' Telesat CEO Dan Goldberg told Reuters.
