Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta issues warnings to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and ITG Brands that they may be in violation of California's ban on flavored tobacco products.
L.A. will ban many businesses from selling tobacco products that come in sweet, spicy and minty flavors under restrictions backed by the City Council.. The campaign against the flavor ban raised millions of dollars, including funds from R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris USA.
The letter sent to R.J. Reynolds stated that the company used brand names, text and colors that are “traditionally” associated with menthol-flavored tobacco products. The reviewed products also included a nontobacco “capsule” that the labeling indicated would produce a different taste. An R.J. Reynolds spokesperson said in an email statement that the letters were “issued in error” and that the products listed by the state attorney general did not have any “distinguishable taste or aroma other than tobacco.”
