The voting method has gained popularity in recent years.

A new state bill from two Silicon Valley legislators could put Santa Clara County one step closer to adopting ranked choice voting.

California law dictates that only cities — not counties — can change their voting methods on their own, which is why state legislation is needed before Santa Clara County could proceed with the change.

Proponents of the voting method say it eliminates the need for multiple elections and helps promote democracy, while critics say it’s too complicated and delays election results. San Jose last year declined to adopt ranked choice voting saying it was too confusing and could potentially disenfranchise voters.

However, at the time, the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters didn’t have the technology to make the change. In 2019, the county purchased new machines that would make ranked choice voting possible.
