Cleveland St. Ignatius captured its fourth consecutive Division I boys soccer state title by beating New Albany 2-0 on Nov. 12 at Lower.com Field.
“Our defense has been great, especially over the past couple games. A lot of teams haven’t done that against them, and the midfield did a great job tracking their runners,” Eagles defender Spencer Chadwick said. “You could tell they were a little flustered. They weren’t used to getting shut down like that. I could feel the momentum shifting in our favor … and I thought we could capitalize. But knows how to deal with that. You saw a different team come out in the second half.
New Albany, which was in its second state final in three seasons, finished 16-2-3. The Eagles came in not having lost in a 20-game stretch dating to a 1-0 season-opening setback to Olentangy Orange on Aug. 25. Senior goalie Kyle Lapper made seven saves for the Eagles before exiting with a right wrist injury with 11:48 to go.Patrick McLaughlin made two saves for St. Ignatius, which finished 21-2, is top-ranked in the country by MaxPreps and outshot New Albany 26-7 in winning the program’s 12th title. The Wildcats, who also defeated the Eagles 4-1 in the 2020 state final, are 86-2-2 the last four seasons.
