New $39M children's mental health hospital prepares to tackle mounting challenges facing youth yyc ableg
“I didn’t think the kind of illness I had made me worthy of taking up space in a hospital.”The 3,200-square-metre Summit, built on philanthropy, will provide three programs: no-cost, walk-in therapy sessions, services to address escalating symptoms to keep youth out of acute care and a day hospital to transition patients out of round-the-clock treatment.
“No longer will they and their families have to wade through a mental health system often geared for adults or have to wait for an intervention when the situation grows desperate,” he said.He cited statistics showing one in five children and teenagers in Canada suffer from mental health issues like depression, schizophrenia and eating disorders.
Those involved in the study say those realities show the need for better mental health care for children and youth.
