Ramona, whose character Eleanor is a peppy theater kid, also gave a shout out to the show's great writing. The series shows a rare depiction of an Asian American character interested in the arts and with an imperfect life at home in the form of Eleanor's absent mother. Ramona looked inward to find ways to emotionally connect with her character.. "I think a lot of kids in our generation relate to that. So when Eleanor's mom leaves, it's something that I personally related to.
Just because these sorts of characters aren’t typically portrayed on screen, characters who are ambitious young women of color interested in sex and with messy family lives, doesn’t mean they don’t exist in real life. The stars know that this show is going to resonate with similar teen years that have largely not seen their stories in pop culture.
