Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville expects hybrid power to play a bigger role in Mexico than at any other rally on the 2023 WRC calendar.
Mexico’s high-altitude rough gravel stages return to the WRC for the first time since the COVID-shortened event in 2020. The rally will also mark the first gravel round of the 2023 season and a maiden run for the Rally1 hybrid cars at significantly high altitude.
Neuville believes the 100kW Compact Dynamics-designed hybrid unit will play an increasingly more significant role at the 16-19 March event. Neuville was a delayed 16th in Mexico when the WRC last visited in 2020 after electrical gremlins struck his HyundaiAlthough difficult to simulate the conditions crews will face in Mexico, Neuville was happy with the work achieved following his test outing on Tuesday.“Obviously we can only simulate Mexican conditions, so it is really hard to say whether we have gone in the right direction or not.
