The big-ticket item in the UCP’s platform is the personal tax cut of eight per cent at $60,000. For this fiscal year, that cost works out to $262 million, and when combined with the fuel tax holiday extended to the end of 2023, it totals $692 million. The tax cut jumps to a $1-billion cost to provincial coffers in 2024-25, $1.1 billion in 2025-26 and almost $1.2 billion the following year.

Part of the increase in spending is the escalation in the amount the personal tax cut will cost. But spending on promises is also slated to increase beginning next year, including the bulk of spending for the UCP Safe Streets initiatives, with not a nickel being spent on the party’s funding promises for ankle monitors, women’s shelters or sexual assault counselling until 2024-25.Article content
This adds an extra variable in projecting the impacts of WTI on future budgets and the financial framework installed in the last budget.
