The state even offers debt forgiveness

In the upcoming days – if it hasn’t happened already -- hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans could find a note attached to their electric and gas bills that would make anyone hyperventilate.

Many families in our state cannot afford an overdue balance that in many cases ballooned to four figures during the pandemic, so imagine the anxiety.

The state’s moratorium for utility shutoffs ended on March 15, and these residents, who collectively owe $660 million, are in danger of losing power unless someone stops the clock. The Legislature began that process last week, when committees inthat provides a 60-day grace period in which electric, gas, or water service cannot be shut off, as long as residents apply for aid.
