Study: During the last decade, almost 50% of new mothers in the U.S. were prescribed opioids before or after delivery

On a positive note, they found that prescriptions for opioids after giving birth did decline over weeks to months after birth, whether by C-section or vaginal delivery since 2008. One explanation for this observed reduction could have been related to a greater national awareness of the opioid epidemic among medical providers as well as patients.

Peahl’s advice to new moms is this:"Pain after birth is like a mountain: once you're at the peak, it is harder to get down. Using non-narcotic pain medications before opioids can help better manage your pain by preventing you from reaching that peak." While the study excluded women with prior opioid use and those in treatment for substance abuse, the study also excluded women who underwent surgical or medical procedures within a year of delivering, including readmission for further surgical procedures, and women who were hospitalized for more than a month after giving birth.

However, two of the most influential and modifiable risk factors noted in the study were this: the number of pills prescribed, and when they were prescribed. The larger the initial number of pills prescribed, the more likely they were to refill multiple prescriptions in the months after giving birth. In addition, women who filled prescriptions prior to birth were more likely to develop new and persistent use.

Davidov acknowledges “that physicians must use extreme caution when prescribing opioids, as there is a high rate of persistent use and abuse. Despite this well known fact, physicians are still overprescribing opioids.
