OTTAWA — The NDP is calling on Speaker of the House Anthony Rota to resign for honouring a man who fought for a Nazi unit during the Second World ...

NDP House leader Peter Julian said Rota made an “unforgivable error” and that “a sacred trust has been broken” in recognizing 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka as “a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero” moments before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address to Parliament, prompting MPs and dignitaries in the House to offer a standing ovation.

Rota had previously apologized for recognizing Hunka, and apologized profusely once again in the House on Monday morning. Rota added that the initiative to recognize Hunka, a member of his riding of Nipissing—Timiskaming in northern Ontario, was “entirely” his own.
